Department of Political Science


The Department of Political Science was established in the year 1994. The department offers B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science to students. The department also teaches students of B.A. Prog. (Political Science) and offers variety of paper to them. The existing curriculum for Political Science papers in B.A. Prog. is also available on the DU website. The department also offers interdisciplinary Generic Elective (GE) papers for other Honours courses. There are a total number of ten faculty members currently employed with the department.

The faculty has varied interests across the discipline ranging from Political Theory, Nationalism, Foreign Policy, African Politics, South Asian Politics, Human Rights, Public Administration, Indian Diaspora etc. ‘Chanakya’ is the Political Science student society of Maharaja Agrasen College that aims at providing services that enable students to develop their full potential and to reach their educational goals. Chanakya society organizes its Annual Fest in the month of September each year where various competitions like Slam Poetry, Political Quiz, Just a Minute, Political Caricature, Funk from Junk which was to encourage students to Make Best out of the Waste, Ek din ka Mantri where participants were given the role of a minister and Drollery-stand-up comedy, poster making, extempore, Multilevel debates, essay writing, mock elections etc. are held to provide a learning atmosphere to the students of the department. All these events helped in overall personality development of the students. Chanakya celebrated Kargil Diwas on 26th July 2021 to honor the sacrifice of the soldiers during Kargil War, by organizing various competitions. Chanakya also celebrated Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, 2021. The Department of Political Science also held Department Orientation on 23rd November 2021 for first year students to welcome them to the department through online mode. ‘Vimarsh’ the debating society of the Department of Political Science has been active throughout the year in the field of initiating healthy group discussion and round table sessions on various topics of importance. Vimarsh also holds monthly sessions twice every week. This encourages students from different departments to participate in the group discussion as well. The department organizes Invited Lectures of Resource Persons as part of its Monthly Lecture Series. Some of the lectures held in 2021- 22 session were on Ekaatam Maanav Darshan and Antodaya Sankalpana, Liberalised India, Politicised Middle Class and Software Professionals Indian Federalism, India’s Imperatives in its Neighbourhood and Emerging Powers in Post-American World. Seminars on relevant topics are also organised to provide all-round exposure to the department students as well.

As faculty on 5th -6th August 2021, the Department of Political Science held a National Conference on Perspective on Indian Democracy: One Nation, One Election sponsored by ICSSR. These events are a platform where students are actively encouraged to participate and enhance their experience and knowledge. Accordingly, the study of Political Science enables the students to have good knowledge about progressive ideas and revolutionary changes. This makes it easy to take collective decisions in social, economic and political fields. With this purpose a degree in political science prepares our students for many forms of employment as well as further research study. Students gain many analytical and practical skills including the ability to conduct research, oral and written communication and IT, all of which are invaluable in today’s employment market which ultimately help them to become IAS, Policy Analyst. Legislative Assistant, Public Relations Specialist, Social Media Manager, Marketing Research Analyst, Political Consultant, Attorney and to work with NGOs.
